Data migration

Data migration in IFS Cloud is the structured transfer of master and transactional data from a legacy system, or from an earlier IFS Applications version, into IFS Cloud, using IFS's own toolset: Data Migration Manager (DMM) built on FndMig.

It covers four things, not just moving records:

  1. Extraction - pulling data out of the source system in a structured, repeatable way.
  2. Transformation - mapping old field values, codes, and structures onto the IFS Cloud data model. This is where most real project time goes: unit of measure mismatches, orphaned references, and Excel-based "temporary" fixes that never got cleaned up in the old system.
  3. Validation - checking the data against IFS Cloud's business rules before load, not after. A record that loads without error is not the same as a record that is correct.
  4. Load - running the migration through DMM in a controlled, repeatable sequence, with the ability to re-run a failed batch without touching the records that already loaded correctly.

Done properly, data migration is rehearsed on a test environment multiple times before go-live, with the same scripts and mapping used every time, so the final cutover is a repetition of a known process, not a first attempt under pressure.
